Kalpana Saroj
Indian Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
Kalpana Saroj (born 1961) is a renowned Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist who transformed her life from extreme adversity to become a business tycoon. Born into a Dalit family in Maharashtra, she faced severe caste-based discrimination, poverty, and a traumatic child marriage at age 12, which led to an abusive living situation in a Mumbai slum. After being rescued, she faced societal stigma, but chose to rise above it, moving to Mumbai to work in a garment factory for a meagre daily wage. Through sheer resilience and determination, Saroj launched her own tailoring business, expanding into furniture and real estate. Her defining moment came when she took over the failing Kamani Tubes company in 2001, successfully turning it into a profitable venture, leading to her being described as an "original slumdog millionaire". In 2013, she was awarded the Padma Shri for Trade and Industry, cementing her legacy as a symbol of hope and empowerment.
